LESSON 2 : ANALOGOUS RELATIONSHIP

An Analogy
-         a pair of words that serves as the basis for the completion of another pair. Analyzing analogies can help in figuring out the meaning of unfamiliar words and learning new meanings for the words you already know.

Example : temporary : permanent :: stationary : mobile

    Note : We read the above analogy as :
                    “Temporary is to permanent as stationary is to mobile “

KINDS OF RELATIONSHIPS IN A WORD ANALOGY:

1.     Words may have similar or opposite meaning
Example :
 ( Opposite) : indolent is to industrious as cowardly is to courageous
 (Similar)      : tidy is to clean as dirty is to mess

2.     One word is part of the other
Example : sofa is to living room as bed is to bedroom

3.     One word shows a cause and the other its effect
Example : deforestation is to flood as smoke belching is to pollution

4.     One word is a symbol of the other
Example : green is to youth as red is to courage

5.     One word is general, the other specific
Example : fish is to bass as spider is to arthropod

6.     One word functions in relation to the other
Example : food is to animal as fuel is to car

7.     One word is a parent and the other, an offspring
Example : goat is to kid as kangaroo is to joey

ANTONYMS : are words that have opposite meanings.

   Examples :
1.              create – destroy
2.              inexpensive – costly
3.              tragic –comic
4.              common – rare
5.              ahead – behind

       LESSON 4 : HOMOPHONES AND HOMONYMS

HOMOPHONES – are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spelling.

Examples : eight –ate
                    see –sea
                    peas – peace
                    route – root

HOMONYMS – are words which have the same sounds and the same spelling but different meanings.
                     - are words with multiple meanings

Example : BELIEVE – a. to take as true or real
                                   b. to have faith and confidence
                                                      c. to think
