SUFFIXES
Read the following sentences and focus your attention on the underlined word/letters.
1. Hot air
moves upward and cold air moves downward.
2. The hot
air goes up and cold air goes down is a basic principle in Science.
3. Long ago,
it was foolish to think that man could fly.
What
suffix is added to the base or root words up? Down? Base? Fool?
The
suffix –ward means toward one side and refers to direction. What does upward
mean? Downward? Give other words with the suffix –ward.
The
suffix –ic refers to a condition. What does basic mean? Give words with the
suffix –ic.
The
suffix –ish means of the nature of; like. What does foolish mean? Give other
words with the suffix –ish.
