COMPOUND WORDS

A compound word is formed by putting two or more words together. There are three kinds of compound words.

1.    Closed – written as one word, like rainbow,thunderstorm, raincoat
2.    Open – written separately, like ice cream, fairy tale, school year
3.    Hyphenated – joined by a hyphen, like twenty-two, life-size, one-sided

Look at each picture on page 131, activity 3-A. In the blank, write the compound word that names the object in the picture. (not recorded)

SYNONYMS
Let us now study each pair of words below.
1.    lonely – sad                          4.   protected – guarded
2.    tasty – yummy                      5.   directed - guided
3.    large – huge                         6.   beautiful – pretty

What have you observed? (They mean the same.) What do we call these words? (Synonyms are words with the same or nearly the same meanings.)

ANTONYMS
Words have opposite meanings. Let us study these examples.
1.    black – white                        5.  pretty – ugly
2.    kind – mean                         6.  sweet – sour
3.    first – last                             7.  stop – go
4.    sooner – later                       8.  sad – happy

Words with opposite meanings are called antonyms.
